Recent advances in filament winding technology has made this latest generation of carbon rims possible. Lighter weight layups have been achieved but also significant weight saving through a new, glossy but ultimately raw finish. The fibres on the rims are more visible than before – the consistency of the base fibres is now so uniform that it can make up the visible layer. There is no longer a need for cosmetic finishes or coats. The fibres you see are the raw fibres making up the rims themselves. There is a shaping around the valve hole to help with tubeless setup/stable valve placement.
The 780 is a new, modified profile designed around the highly stable 77 rim. This time, however, available in two separate widths. The first 21mm internal – optimised around a 25c tyre and the second, a 22.5mm internal, optimised around a 28c tyre. Both are, ultimately compatible with both – we would typically recommend the wider model here for maximum versatility – but the 21mm will allow compatibility with even narrower tyres and also with bikes with tighter clearances.
