Description
The Big Boy is the wider sibling of the DCR XC/AM — the same design philosophy applied to a 30mm internal width, making it the right choice for MTB tyres over 2.1 inches. At 18mm deep it is one of the shallower rims in the DCR range, and that shallowness is the point. Shallow rims flex more vertically than deeper ones, and on rough terrain that compliance translates directly into a more comfortable, more controlled ride. The Big Boy is not engineered for maximum impact resistance — it is engineered for maximum comfort under load, and it does that particularly well.
The alloy is 6066-T6, the same material used throughout the DCR range where durability matters. Stronger and more fatigue-resistant than the 6061 alloy common at this price point, it gives the rim the structural integrity to hold up over long mileage and repeated loading without adding unnecessary weight. The rim is welded for a consistent joint, internally anodised to protect against moisture and tubeless sealant, and tubeless compatible throughout.
At 465g in 650b and 495g in 700c it is a light rim for its width class. The combination of low weight, shallow profile and 30mm internal width produces a wheel that feels alive and responsive on trail — quick to accelerate, easy to manoeuvre, and forgiving on the rough stuff in a way that a heavier or deeper rim cannot match.
It is worth noting that the Big Boy has found an audience beyond its intended MTB application. A number of riders have used it successfully in gravel mega events — the kind of long-distance mixed-surface riding where a wide, compliant, light rim with good tyre support makes more practical sense than a narrower road-biased option. This was not a planned use case; it emerged from riders making sensible choices about what actually works over very long distances on variable terrain. If that sounds like your kind of riding, it is worth considering.
For tyres up to 2.1 inches, the DCR XC/AM is the more appropriate choice. For heavier duty applications requiring maximum impact resistance, the DCR E-bike Downhill range is better suited.
